The use of mediation, as an alternative to either litigation or arbitration, to settle disputes is becoming more widespread, including in Ireland where a new Bill proposes the establishment of a statutory basis for the accreditation of Mediators. The proposal has been largely welcomed by the Mediators’ Institute of Ireland (MII) which currently runs its own accreditation scheme. To obtain a practising certificate, MII members have to undertake at least 60 hours’ initial training, agree to abide to a code of ethics, and hold an appropriate level of professional indemnity insurance. |
